Hersh Goldberg-Polin: who was he?
At the age of seven, Hersh Goldberg-Polin left his birthplace of Oakland, California, to relocate to Israel in 2008.
He was a dual citizen, American and Israeli.
They described him as a “happy-go-lucky” person. This trait has been present in him since childhood. He had a strong interest in geography and travel. Globes, atlases, and National Geographic publications littered his bedroom. Mr. Goldberg-Polin had hoped to travel around the world in December 2023 before someone abducted him; however, the events at the Nova music festival cruelly put an end to that goal.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked the Nova music festival in southern Israel. During this attack, they abducted Hersh Goldberg-Polin. He was one of the hundreds of teenage festival attendees. During the surprise attack, the attackers left over 1200 people dead. Kidnappers took him and hundreds of other teenage festival attendees. When Mr. Goldberg-Polin and his comrades first sought safety in a bomb shelter, he valiantly tried to deflect grenades launched by Hamas fighters, but in the process, he lost his left arm from the elbow down.
His parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin were among the most outspoken supporters of their son’s release from captivity. They publicly pressed the Israeli government to negotiate a deal for the release of the hostages, and they spoke with key US officials regularly.
On September 1, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who had been held captive for almost a year, was declared dead. It was said that they were slain just before Israeli troops arrived, and his body was discovered in tunnels controlled by Hamas beneath the city of Rafah.
