Hindus demonstrated against the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a well-known Hindu religious figure. Bangladeshi police responded with tear gas. When police in Dhaka and Chittagong fired tear gas to scatter a sizable gathering of Hindu demonstrators, tensions increased. The move was taken at the same time that India requested Bangladesh’s interim government to protect minorities and Hindus.

On Monday, authorities at the airport in Dhaka took Chinmoy Krishna Das into custody. He was a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). They suspected him of sedition. His supporters have protested his arrest in large numbers. Many expressed disapproval of the way the nation treats Hindus and other religious minorities.

Authorities have brought charges against Das. The gathering in Chittagong in October is where he allegedly disregarded Bangladesh’s flag. The demonstration descended into violence on Tuesday. As a result, the Chittagong court refused to grant him bail, and authorities immediately sent him back to prison. Over 2000 of Das’s fans surrounded the police van. They blocked it for more than two hours while he was being led back to jail.

Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz of Chittagong Metropolitan Police described the demonstrators’ actions as a rampage. The scene, according to him, was chaotic.

“They lost control and started hurling bricks at us. We had to use tear gas to scatter the crowd. “Aziz told Reuters that one of our constables got hurt, but no one sustained serious injuries.”

India has taken notice of the arrest in Bangladesh. The protests that followed have caused serious concerns for India about the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

India expresses “severe concern.”

India called on Bangladeshi authorities to protect Hindus and all other minorities on Tuesday.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that “this incident follows the multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh.”

In Bangladesh, there are “several documented cases” of theft, vandalism, and desecration of temples and deities. I addition to it there were cases of fire and looting of the homes and businesses of minorities. The statement stated, “It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings.”

Since August 5, 2024, when Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League administration fell, various attackers have carried out more than 200 attacks in 50 different districts. The Hindu population comprises only about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million inhabitants and is the country’s minority Hindu population.
