On Day 9, Team USA added ten medals, five of which were gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Today, at the Paris Games, Team USA increased its total medal count to 71 by adding, in particular, five gold, two silver, and three bronze medals to its collection.
Specifically, the five gold medals came from road cycling, swimming, golf, and track and field; meanwhile, the two silvers came from swimming and archery; and, additionally, the three bronzes came from skeet shooting, gymnastics, and track and field.
Notably, the United States contributed half of the twenty medals that were awarded today to its total.
As a result, it ranks first among rival countries and teams and is tied with China (19) for the most gold medals. In total, there are 19 gold, 26 silver, and 26 bronze medals held by the Americans.
Track & field: Men’s hammer throw from Canada is excellent
Today, Ethan Katzberg won the first gold medal in hammer throw history for Canada.
Since Duncan Gillis won silver in the event in 1912, Katzberg’s medal is, in fact, the first of any color to win. Furthermore, after going four Games without a gold medal in track and field, Canada has now earned at least one gold medal in this series.
In addition, Bence Halász of Hungary won the silver, and Mykhaylo Kokhan of Ukraine took home the bronze.
More importantly, Halász carries on a legacy. In the past 50 years, Hungary has won six track and field medals. All of them were in throwing competitions.
As for Ukraine, this is, notably, their second-ever medal in this category, whether it be for men or women. Specifically, the first medal was awarded to the 1996 silver medallist Oleksandr Krykun.
After taking home just one medal in track and field at the previous two Olympics, Ukraine earned three today.
Meanwhile, American Daniel Haugh was eliminated in qualifying, and fellow American Rudy Winkler finished sixth in the championship match.
The eight men in the final field for the 100 meters finished in under ten seconds in a first.
The 100-meter event saw eight men finish in less than 10 seconds. Moreover, this was a record for a wind-legal race, according to World Athletics. In addition, World Athletics, the organization that oversees all sports, including track and field, made the announcement.
The race was extremely close. Noah Lyles of Team USA won the gold with a time of 9.79. Meanwhile, Kishane Thompson of Jamaica finished in second place at the same time, 9.79. Ultimately, Lyles prevailed in the battle of the decimal places by 0.005 of a second.
On the other hand, Oblique Seville from Jamaica finished in last place today. Moreover, if they had competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Seville would have placed fourth with a score of 9.91.
In addition, in Tokyo, six finalists completed the race in less than ten seconds. However, one runner was disqualified, and another did not finish the race.
