To boost surveillance, the authorities have installed 2,751 CCTV cameras across key locations, with 328 of them powered by AI. These advanced cameras work alongside cutting-edge analytics driven by AI to enhance security efforts.

On Monday, the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 opening day, devotees take a sacred bath at Triveni Sangam.

To keep pilgrims safe during the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, authorities have put a seven-ring security plan into action. It has transformed the Mela region into a fortress. The authorities have set a plan in motion to welcome the four crore devotees expected to take a holy plunge on January 13–14. 

Authorities anticipate that approximately 1 crore devotees will visit the location on Paush Purnima (January 13). On Makar Sankranti, which falls on January 14, around 3 crore people are expected to take a holy bath.  The mela has already begun.

The police established a traffic diversion plan for all seven highways leading to Sangam(Confluence). They also labeled the entire Mela area a “no vehicle zone.”

Mela police have implemented sophisticated AI-powered analytics systems to enhance surveillance and control crowds. They also use 2,751 CCTV cameras, including 328 AI-enabled ones at strategic sites like Sangam and the tent city.

IG Prem Gautam from the Prayagraj range shared that around 40,000 police officers, along with paramilitary forces and teams from UP technical services, are actively working in and around the Mela area. It’s a massive effort to ensure everyone’s safety and security during this bustling event!

Additionally, he stated that police are closely monitoring all important areas. These areas include pandals, camps, tent cities, Sangam, and Sanskriti Gramme.

The anti-drone system, drones guarantee round-the-clock monitoring during Mahakumbh 2025

An advanced anti-drone system has been activated. It is crewed by a team of highly qualified experts to improve security during the Mela. Twenty advanced drones have also been deployed to provide seamless, round-the-clock surveillance.

These drones provide real-time updates in all 25 Mela sectors. They capture every aspect of the crowd with a single click, guaranteeing an extensive and effective monitoring system.

The improved Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will provide vital information for efficient traffic and crowd control.

450,000 power outlets and 150,000 tents

To accommodate the pilgrims, authorities have erected 150,000 tents; the anticipated number of visitors is three times Russia’s population.
The administration has already allocated more than half of the 4,50,000 new electrical connections that it hopes to deliver.

Saints and sadhus who lead pious spiritual lives attend the Kumbh Mela. Hermits who come out of isolation also attend the festival.

The Kumbh Mela’s appeal extends beyond India. Celebrities from around the world, such as the Dalai Lama, director David Lynch, and actor Richard Gere, have attended.

UNESCO recognized the Kumbh Mela as a part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

Held every three years in four places along India’s holy rivers, the Kumbh Mela draws millions of people. The most crowded and considered most auspicious is the “maha” Kumbh, which takes place once every twelve years. During the Mela, devotees believe that soaking in these waters absolves sins. They also believe that this practice provides freedom from the cycle of life and death.
