The Paris Olympic Village is open to welcome athletes.
One of the main scenes for Paris 2024 has begun. This morning was the opening of the Olympic Village. The first athletes moved in eight days before the start of the Olympic Games.
This event is important because it initiates the Paris event. It is an indication that everything has been ready. It also signifies the start of operations for facilities that require three years to build. These venues can accommodate up to 14,000 people. The delegates can check into their hotels if they arrive on time, according to the organizers. For those that come on time, this process will just take a few hours.
Over the previous week, each delegation’s chiefs and their teams have been hard preparing. They have been working hard even though the Olympic Village officially opened today. They have been getting ready to enter their respective nations. André-Pierre Goubert, the deputy head of the French delegation, made a claim a few days ago. On Thursday, the Village will begin to swell and come to life.
Athletes began to arrive at the Olympic Village.
For a few days, representatives from Belgium, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands have been at the facility. They have completed the final preparations nearly ahead of schedule to guarantee their teams have the greatest experience. This morning, delegations from Australia, Thailand, and Colombia were the first to arrive.
Goubert says more nations will come today to begin organizing and getting ready, including the US, Brazil, and Switzerland. Australian hockey player Stephanie Kershaw expressed her excitement about starting the indoor event, stating, “We are thrilled to be indoors and for it to commence,” according to AFP.”It looks great.”
The International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, was excited to witness the Olympic Village. He was very excited to welcome the first athletes that came. Finally, here we are. It’s been a long but tremendously rewarding trip these past seven years. We have everything we need for a fantastic Olympic Games, including an incredible Olympic Village. The locations are not only breathtaking, but they also adhere to the highest standards. He said, “You sense the growing enthusiasm in France, and I hope you feel the same way.”
Large staff
The organizing team has diligently prepared all the facilities and ensured they are in excellent condition. Laurent Michaud, the Village director, stated that the team needed to resolve several issues, particularly those related to conditioning and cleaning.
During peak occupancy, the Olympic Village, which spans 52 hectares north of Paris between Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen, and Ile Saint-Denis, can accommodate up to 14,500 people. There will be nine thousand athletes among them. Four thousand volunteers will assist the delegations daily and make sure that everything proceeds according to schedule. The remaining 4,000 will work as employees, doing catering and cleaning work. Michaud predicts that “it will resemble a genuine beehive.”
Benefits for hosts
France’s women’s water polo team will participate in today’s opening ceremony as the host country. Goubert’s description stated that about thirty people would formally open the facilities designated for the local delegation. Similarly, having organized the Olympic Games gave France the advantage of choosing this building from all the others that were available; it is located next to the Village Polyclinic and near the restaurant in the City of Cinema.
Besides a 170 square meter private training room (a public one is also accessible at the Village), the 573 athletes (51 substitutes) that make up the French delegation will also benefit from a common area featuring a huge TV, board games, and table football.
The Olympic Village
The Olympic Village consists of 82 structures with 3,00 units totaling 7,200 rooms. Among its facilities are a medical clinic, a 24-hour fitness center, and a food service that can feed 60,000 people a day. This effort, which places a strong emphasis on sustainability, seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by lowering carbon footprint—a critical indicator.
The organizers of the Olympic Village are proud that their residents don’t require air conditioning to stay cool. Inside the buildings, the temperature is kept at six degrees Celsius instead of outside. A few delegations have ordered their air conditioners, though, including the US.
After the Games, the area will become a new neighborhood. 2.500 homes, a hotel, student accommodation, a three-hectare garden park, and almost seven additional hectares of green space will all be built. In addition, 120.000 square meters of offices, 3.200 square meters of neighborhood shops, and community services are planned.
