According to Reuters, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced martial law in a live, emergency national address on Tuesday.
“Shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces” would be eliminated, Yeol declared in his surprise late-night speech on YTN television.
While Yeol did not specifically address any threat posed by nuclear-armed North Korea, he did concentrate on his rivals in the Southern political arena.
After a string of autocratic rulers in its early history, the entire nation was taken aback by the action. There have been democratic leaders in South Korea since the 1980s.
The decision caused the Korean currency, won, to plummet sharply against the US dollar.
Yoon stated that he had no choice but to impose martial law in order to protect the free and constitutional order, adding that opposition parties had taken over the parliamentary process with the goal of causing a crisis in the country.
“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order,” he said.
The president did not outline the actions that his administration would take in this case. According to the Yonhap news agency, authorities closed the entrance to the parliament.
According to Yonhap, Yoon was given the recommendation for martial law by the South Korean defense minister.
Yonhap reported that the defense minister of South Korea presented Yoon with the proposal for martial law.
The Democratic Party, which has a majority in the Parliament, is led by Lee Jae-myung, who declared that “tanks, armored personnel carriers, and soldiers with guns and knives will rule the country.”
“The Republic of Korea’s economy will irreversibly collapse. In an online webcast, Lee urged his fellow citizens to attend the National Assembly.
During his speech, Yoon also mentioned an impeachment motion that the Democratic Party had filed this week. They rejected a government budget proposal and impeached some of South Korea’s top prosecutors.
South Korean ministers protested on Monday against the opposition’s decision to cut more than 4 trillion won from the government’s proposed budget. According to Yoon, such a move compromises the government’s fundamental operations.
