Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed regret for the Azerbaijan Airlines jet crash.. The crash occurred in Grozny, Chechnya, on Wednesday after the plane crossed Russian territory.

According to the Kremlin, Putin stated that Russia’s air defense systems were operational when the aircraft attempted to land in Grozny. 38 passengers were killed when the plane crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The plane crashed after it could not reach the airport and instead headed east.

On board the aircraft were individuals from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Azerbaijan. There were two children among the survivors.

A US official told CNN on Thursday that preliminary findings suggest a Russian anti-aircraft system may have brought down the passenger flight. The official did not specify the type of system. The cause of the incident is still unknown. Putin did not claim in his remarks that the plane was struck by Russian air defenses.

In a phone conversation with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Putin “apologized for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace,” according to a statement from the Kremlin.

The plane made many attempts to land at the Grozny airport, according to the Kremlin.

The Kremlin stated that the aircraft repeatedly attempted to land at the airport in Grozny. However, Ukrainian drones targeted the regions of Grozny, Mozdok, and Vladikavkaz, and Russian air defense systems successfully repelled the attacks.

According to the statement, Russia’s investigative committee has launched a criminal case in connection with the catastrophe.

Photos and videos taken after the disaster show that shrapnel or debris damaged the plane’s body, leaving perforations. So far, no one has figured out what caused these holes.

Miles O’Brien, a CNN aviation specialist, stated that the bent metal surrounding the holes indicates an explosion near the tail of the aircraft. This explosion hints that something nearby the tail caused the damage.

The holes in the aircraft’s side are consistent with shrapnel damage. An explosion is the likely cause, according to a US official.

In a chat on Saturday, the official presidential statement mentioned that Aliyev from Azerbaijan told Putin that the aircraft faced “external physical and technical interference” while flying in Russian airspace and totally lost control.

According to Aliyev, Azerbaijani officials had listened to the accounts of survivors, studied the injuries sustained by passengers and crew members due to “foreign particles that penetrated the aircraft deck while still in the air,” and looked at holes in the plane’s fuselage.
