From the charming young princess in paisley prints to the charismatic Princess of Asturias we know today, one thing is certain: at 19, Princess Leonor is an heir apparent assuming leadership.
The heir to the monarchy of Spain, Princess Leonor, turns 19 on October 31. Happy birthday, Princess Leonor. Before her birthday, the eldest daughter of King Filipe VI and Queen Letitiza has been assuming a more public position. She has been giving more and more solo speeches since giving her first significant one in 2019. Last summer, she enrolled in the three-year military program at Zaragoza Military Academy. She has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to her position as Cadet Borbon, knowing that she would eventually succeed her father and take over as commander in chief of the armed forces.
The princess was born an infanta on October 31, 2005, during the reign of her grandpa, King Juan Carlos I. She is the older sister of Infanta Sofia, who is seventeen years old. She became the Princess of the Asturias, an honor bestowed to the presumed heir to the throne, similar to that of the Prince or Princess of Wales or the Dauphin or Dauphine of France, upon her grandfather’s resignation in 2014 and her father’s accession to the throne. On her eighteenth birthday, she was presented to Spain’s Cortes Generale, formally recognizing her as such. She will become the first female regent of Spain since 1868 when she ascends to the throne.
