Images of the Extraordinary Night
At the Olympic opening ceremony, the host country has the opportunity to astonish the whole world with a breathtaking show.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games organizers opted to host the opening ceremony inside the city rather than in a stadium. People usually handled things differently.
On a rainy evening, thousands of athletes and performers ignited a dazzling Technicolor light show, unsurpassed in its ambition, as they paraded down the Seine River. There was also illumination of the Eiffel Tower and the night sky.
These are a few of the more striking photos from the evening.
Olympic torch
Following a three-month trip from Greece to Paris, former French football player Zinedine Zidane received the Olympic flame.

Sprinter Marie-Jose Perec and renowned French judoist Teddy Riner lit the Olympic flame in a cauldron, launching a giant hot air balloon in a spectacular climax.
Then the huge glowing balloon passed over Paris, marking the start of the grandest show on Earth.
The stunning display of vibrant smoke during the opening ceremony
The opening ceremony began with an amazing display of colorful smoke that looked like the French flag rising over the Pont d’Austerlitz.
For the most part, the eager attendees and observers were unfazed by the gloomy weather.
Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, and French President Emmanuel Macron were also in attendance.

American singer Ariana Grande graces the opening ceremony
Attending the occasion were several celebrities, including American singer Ariana Grande and her British Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo.
As could be expected, tens of thousands of police officers were posted across the city, and security was stepped up.
A shadowy torchbearer with a mask moved parkouring on the city’s rooftops beside streams.
The opulent boat parade contributed to making the opening ceremony memorable.
For the first time, athletes from all over the world arrived at the Olympic Games by water. Paris’s “main artery,” the Seine River, was the route taken by each national delegation.
NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who plays for Greece, led the delegation. For the last three years, the country has led the march in honour of the 3,000-year history of the Olympics.
Fleets of team boats from all around the world cruised down the Seine with proudly flying flags.
Team USA at the opening ceremony
During the opening ceremony, Team USA flag bearers LeBron James and Coco Gauff were on the penultimate boat to come into view. The way the country is positioned refers to the 2028 Olympic cycle, in which the US will host the Games in Los Angeles.
The 2024 procession was ceremoniously closed by the host country, France.
Star Performers enhanced the beauty of the opening ceremony
The event featured a wide range of performances, including ones by Lady Gaga, acrobats, ballet dancers, cabaret performers, and Celine Dion, who made an appearance as a distant figure halfway up the Eiffel Tower.
Lady Gaga opened the musical segment of the event by singing “Mon Truc En Plumes” by Zizi Jeanmaire on a set of steps near the Seine River.
Gaga evoked her Las Vegas Jazz and Piano residency with her brief performance, which was surrounded by pink feathers. It also appears to pay tribute to Jeanmaire’s performance of the song on the Ed Sullivan Show. Gaga also down the steps, played the piano, and performed a chorus line dance.
The opening ceremony included Céline Dion’s first performance since she revealed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome.
Dion performed the song “L’Hymne à l’amour” by French singer Édith Piaf from a platform at the base of the Eiffel Tower.
