Prince William told reporters that his father, King Charles, and wife, Catherine, had received “brutal” cancer diagnoses making the past year the most difficult while in South Africa for the Earthshot Prize.
Over the past year, Prince William has shared his thoughts for the first time stating the difficult time he faced. He has spoken about the emotional impact of his father, King Charles III, and wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, following their twin cancer diagnoses.
On Thursday, the last day of a four-day visit to South Africa, the prince gave a speech while hosting the yearly Earthshot Prize. The prize is an environmental honor he established in 2020 to recognize creative responses to climate change.
He told reporters, “It’s been dreadful,” in response to a question about the past year, according to the BBC. Prince William stated probably the most difficult year of my life has been this one. Trying to finish everything else and stay on course has therefore been somewhat challenging.
He said: “I’m proud of my father and wife for managing the things they’ve done. From a personal family perspective, however, it has been harsh.
Less than 18 months after his coronation, doctors diagnosed Charles with cancer.
In early February, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis occurred less than 18 months after his coronation. In March, the news revealed that Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January. Subsequently, doctors diagnosed her with cancer. In both instances, the royal family has requested that the news media respect their wish for privacy. Also, they have not disclosed the type of cancer.
The prince’s remarks have some resemblance to a word used by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who referred to 1992 as her “annus horribilis,” or awful year, following the marriage problems of three of her children and the significant damage inflicted by a fire at Windsor Castle.
However, the royal family has recently received some more encouraging news. King Charles made an announcement in April that he would be returning to his official duties. Catherine has made a recovery and is now beginning to make public appearances again. She said in September that she was “doing what I can to stay cancer-free” after finishing her chemotherapy treatment.
Prince William told reporters on Wednesday that Catherine had been “amazing this whole year” and was doing “really well.”
