The Olympic organizers have issued an official apology. During the Paris opening ceremony, officials mistakenly recognized North Korean athletes as South Koreans. French and English commentators referred to the exuberant audience as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.” Is North Korea’s official name, though? Still, the crowd drifted along the Seine River, flags flying.
Then they used the same name when a North Korean delegation floated past.
Korea has remained split into two halves ever since World War Two ended. Tensions between their administrations have escalated further in recent times.
The subtitle at the bottom of the TV show displayed the correct title.
The South Korean Ministry of Sports declared that it would be submitting a “strong complaint with France on a government level” in response to the humiliating error.
In a statement, the ministry expressed apologies for referring to the delegation from South Korea as the North Korean team.
The statement also mentioned that Olympic weightlifting champion Jang Mi-ran requested a meeting with Thomas Bach, President of the Olympic Committee. The request was made by Jang Mi-ran, the second vice sports minister.
Apology from IOC
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed regret on its official Korean-language X account, saying, “We would like to offer a deep apology over the mistake that occurred in the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony.”
Athletes from the Republic of Korea, formerly known as South Korea, will participate in the Olympics this year. In 21 different sports, 143 competitors will compete for their nation.
North Korean athletes number sixteen. Since Rio 2016, it has not competed in an Olympic Games.
