DR. MOUMITA KILLED WHILE SLEEPING IN THE HOSPITAL
Like any other day, a 31-year-old female doctor had just finished her shift on August 8th. At two in the morning, Dr. Moumita Debnath had dinner with junior physicians after wrapping up her night shift.
Moumita, who had worked nonstop for 36 hours, decided to take a break and get ready to sleep in the seminar room reserved for hospital employees who work long shifts at night.
She was unaware, though, that this would be the final time she would close her eyes in a secure and tranquil manner.
The family was shocked to see their daughter uncovered, lying there when they were finally allowed to visit Moumita. The 90-degree angle of her legs indicated severe pelvic bone injuries.
They were even more shocked when they found her dead in a room that was still under construction across from the seminar room. After learning this information, the family began to wonder what killed their cherished daughter.

The initial autopsy report on Moumita Debnath’s body indicated that someone had strangled her to death and sexually assaulted her. The female doctor’s body had an incredible 150 milliliters of semen, which is significantly more than the average male’s 10 milliliters of semen.
Furthermore, her body displayed hundreds of bite marks, injuries to her abdomen and left leg, a broken ring finger, cuts on her lips, a fractured pelvis (which is one of the strongest bones in the human body), bleeding from the mouth, damage to both eyes, and various other injuries.
Not only did she have serious injuries to her abdomen, but her private parts were also bleeding.
The researchers discovered that she had positioned her legs at a ninety-degree angle. Since the human pelvis is the strongest joint in the body and breaking an adult pelvic capsule requires a force of 2,000 to 10,000 Newtons, the perpetrators’ brutality is clearly visible.
The suspect’s nails appeared to have sparked a struggle with the female doctor, as evidenced by the marks on her face, prompting her to retaliate.
Moreover, sources from the social networking site X assert that a group of 18 to 20 individuals, including a female doctor who was close to Moumita, allegedly caused the doctor’s death by subjecting her to torture and holding her hand.
NEGLIGENCE BY POLICE AND HOSPITAL
Many claims and disclosures regarding Moumita’s death surfaced on social media following the incident’s public release, sparking a great deal of conjecture.
The police initially denied that a gang had raped Moumita, which makes sense. Moreover, the hospital failed to address the issue adequately and only disclosed the incident after it had escalated.
Moumita’s parents expressed their lack of confidence in the Kolkata police. They believed that authorities would not conduct the investigation into their daughter’s death properly. They also expressed their concern that the perpetrators would evade punishment.
Dissatisfied with the inquiry carried out thus far, the Kolkata High Court ordered on August 13th that the state police turn over the matter to the Central Bureau of Inquiry (CBI).
About 7,000 persons visited the crime scene late on August 15th in an attempt to remove any evidence. The people were dissatisfied with the apparent inability of the police to prevent this from happening.
As a result, Mamata Banerjee, the minister of state affairs for Bengal, and the state police came under fire from the High Court for their inability to maintain control of the situation. particularly when the crime scene was open to the public.
A SINGLE ARRESTED SUSPECT: LINK TO THE POLICE?
The police arrested Civic Assistant Sanjay Roy after they discovered his earbuds next to Moumita’s body. He will remain in custody until August 23rd. Sanjay allegedly admitted to carrying out the horrible deed. He went so far as to challenge the authorities to execute him.
According to reports, the suspect—a volunteer police officer—had access to the whole medical facility. Previously, he worked as a middleman for patients he knew when stationed at the police post near the medical institution.

NATIONWIDE PROTESTS
Large-scale protests by Indian women took to the streets when word of Moumita Debnath spread. The demonstrations were held in response to the case, which demonstrated the precarious position of Indian women.
In addition, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organized statewide protests in which medical professionals demanded more protection in hospitals, particularly for female physicians, by taking to the streets and refusing to report to work for a whole day, from 6 AM on August 17 to 6 AM on August 18.
