During a protest on August 17 against the rape and death of a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata last week, medical students in Ahmedabad, western India, yell slogans.

Supporters of Kolkata’s two largest football clubs in West Bengal state put aside their intense rivalry on Sunday night. They marched through the city’s streets to call for the safety of physicians. They also demanded justice for the victim.

Physicians in Odisha state have pledged to postpone their walkout. Those in Delhi have made the same promise. Both groups will delay their strike until they receive quick reforms that meet their demands.

Over the weekend, thousands of people marched in protest around India, including the large cities of Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai. Protesters also staged demonstrations near the Indian parliament in New Delhi.

The incident brought to mind the 2012 gang rape

The protests across the country are similar to those that followed the 2012 gang rape. An assailant raped and killed a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi. The brutal assault led India to pass stronger anti-sexual violence legislation. However, according to the most recent government data, officials were still recording an average of roughly 90 rapes every day as of 2022 data.

On December 16, 2022, a vigil was held to mark the tenth anniversary of the horrific gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi. Asha Devi (C), the mother of the victim of the gang rape in Delhi in 2012, is holding candles and placards with other participants.

The postmortem report of the trainee doctor in Kolkata revealed a level of savagery comparable to the 2012 Delhi gang rape. Indian news sites that obtained access to the report have stated that the woman sustained multiple injuries before her death, with strangling being determined as the cause of death. Based on the nature and severity of the injuries, it is possible that the woman was subjected to torture before her death and may have engaged in a struggle.

The Kolkata Police have accused a volunteer member of the force of rape and murder on August 10. The victim’s parents have expressed concerns about the involvement of additional persons in the case. Last week, the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI), India’s premier criminal investigative body, took over the matter.
