*With 34 medals in all, including 15 gold, 7 silver, and 12 bronze, the Netherlands finished sixth.

For the seventh time in the last eight Olympic Games, the United States tops the medal standings. Moreover, they have the most total medal wins out of all eight.

In addition, for the fourth consecutive Olympics, Great Britain broke the 60-medal barrier, matching their tally from London 2012.

Notably, their total of 65 was one more than what they had in Tokyo three years prior. Despite earning the fewest gold medals since Athens in 2004, with a total of 14, it turned out to be a silver lining for the Games.

Meanwhile, Japan experienced incredible success at the Tokyo Games. Specifically, they won a record-breaking 27 gold medals at home. Furthermore, they earned an additional 20 gold medals, bringing their total to 47 – their second-highest ever.

Additionally, their eight gold medals from the Champ de Mars Arena contributed to their total. Consequently, their reputation as wrestling heavyweights increased this total.

Lastly, Australia finished in fourth position at the Olympic Games in Athens and Tokyo. Significantly, they surpassed their previous best total of 17 gold medals with a total of 18.

The world records that were broken in the Paris Olympics 2024

In a thrilling 400-meter hurdles race, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke her own world record with a timing of 50.37 seconds. Meanwhile, in the 4×400-meter mixed relay, Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Kaylyn Brown, and Bryce Deadmon, all Americans, set a new standard.

Armand Duplantis of Sweden had secured the gold medal in the men’s pole vault. He raised his personal best of 5.91 meters, which he had recorded in April, by one centimeter.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem set a new Olympic record in the Javelin throw with a distance of 92.97m. He dominated the field and earned his first Olympic medal. This win marks Pakistan’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics.

Record Breaking Olympic Performer Men’s Javelin Throw: On Thursday, August 8, 2024, in Paris, France, gold medallist Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan and silver medallist Neeraj Chopra of India celebrate following the men’s javelin throw final.

In all, thirty-one world records were broken, with the velodrome accounting for the largest share (39%) of those breaks. Three of those came from Great Britain’s Sophie Capewell, Emma Finucane, and Katy Marchant, who led their team to victory in the women’s team sprint.

This is higher than the 27 world records surpassed in Rio eight years ago. It compares positively to Tokyo, where 22 world records were set.

There have been reports that swimmers may have slowed down in the Olympic pool because of increased turbulence because of its comparatively short depth of seven feet.

The competitors who did well at the Games

A new swimming sensation emerged in Paris in 2024. Leon Marchand became the first French athlete to win four individual gold medals at a single Summer Olympics.

The 22-year-old made waves at home: He became the third male swimmer in history to accomplish the feat. He followed in the footsteps of American greats Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz. He also added a bronze medal to his collection in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

With five medals, he holds the title. He shares the title of most decorated athlete with: – Torri Huske of the US, and – Mollie O’Callaghan of Australia.

Outside of the pool, A-listers Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, Spike Lee, Tom Brady, and Tom Cruise were all there to support Simone Biles, who was as stunning as ever.

She increased her career total of Olympic gold medals to seven by winning three victories: the all-around and vault titles, as well as the team competition.

The countries surpassing anticipation

When evaluating medals based on population size, the United States came in 47th place.

The top four countries are New Zealand, Saint Lucia, Dominica, and New Zealand. They each win an average of one medal for every 266,945 people.

Medal-starved India, with an average of one medal per 234,151,666, was at the bottom of the chart. Meanwhile, Ireland was in 18th place, Great Britain in 24th place, the USA in 47th place, and China in 74th place.

India sent 117 athletes to the Olympics in Paris. However, they won only five bronze and one silver medal. They were among the 28 teams who did not secure a gold medal in any sport.

What was the outcome of Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN)?

Russia’s absence from the medal table was one of the major changes. Russia, which was among the top four medal-winning nations and had a large contingent, was not present.

In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the nation was prohibited from these Games. Similarly, Belarus was also banned. Only a small number of athletes—15 from Belarus and 17 from Russia—were allowed to compete as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN), meaning they were not allowed to fly their national flags or sing their national anthems.

Their candidacy was subject to stringent requirements. They had to pass background checks to ensure they weren’t working for the Russian or Belarusian military or national security agencies. They couldn’t be actively supporting the conflict.

Although AINs earned medals in five different events, they are not included in the official medal table. The AIN gold medal winners played their specifically crafted anthem at only one medal ceremony.

Two trampoline events (Ivan Litvinovich, men’s gold, and Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya, women’s silver), one rowing event (Yauheni Zalaty, silver), and one weightlifting event (Yauheni Tsikhantsou, bronze) saw medals won by Belarusians.

Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider, Russian women’s doubles tennis players, earned the only silver medal for Russia.
