China tops the gold medal count.
With thirteen first-place finishes, China leads the gold medal standings in the Paris Olympics by a wide margin. Australia and France both had ten gold medals. With nine, the United States is in fourth position.
As track and field competitions begin, this balance is probably going to change soon because American athletes usually win.
Still, it’s important to pause and consider why the Chinese have dominated the first week at the top of the podium.
Firstly, eight of those gold medals have come from China’s two main sports, shooting and diving.
Chinese athletes at the French National Shooting Range in Châteauroux have been composed.
“I was able to maintain self-control today,” Xie Yu remarked following his victory in Sunday’s men’s 10-meter air pistol final.
“I awoke stress-free and in a serene state. Although I was a little anxious, I wasn’t afraid.
China: Rising forces in the world of swimming
On the diving board, the Chinese have likewise been virtually untouchable in Paris.
In the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform final on Monday, Thomas Daley of Great Britain took silver behind two Chinese dives, Lian Junjie, and Yang Hao. “They were pretty much flawless, which was amazing,” Daley said.
“We get a glimmer of hope when we witness how they dive during training. Then again, they activate it.”
In other fields, the Chinese haven’t been as successful. In the world of swimming, they are regarded as a rising force, yet in April of last year, China’s swim squad was embroiled in a doping scandal.
China’s athletes have only earned one gold medal in the pool, clearly shaken by the controversy. They won three gold medals in swimming at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The United States has also trailed behind other nations in the number of gold medals won by swimmers.
Katie Ledecky made Olympic history once again by taking home her eighth gold medal in addition to a silver and a bronze.
However, other competitors who had high expectations, including Regan Smith, Lilly King, and Caeleb Dressel, haven’t made it to the podium and have instead had to settle with silver or bronze.
The American swim team wins ten gold medals in the Summer Olympics in most years. They have only managed to catch four so far this year.
China tops the medal tally
Regarding China’s position on the medal board, one last thing.
The International Olympic Committee lists the countries in order of gold medals won. China is ahead of the pack overall at the Paris Games based on that total.
However, Team USA has long been using total medals, including gold, silver, and bronze, to rank countries.
According to that total, the United States is in first place with more than 40 medals, followed by the host nation, France, with more than 30 medals.
