From Heidi Klum’s eye-catching E.T. Halloween costume to the viral Harris-Walz camo caps unveiled throughout the campaign trail, Style has dedicated each week of 2024 to the most notable or talked-about fashionable celebrity moment of the previous seven days.
Of course, not all ensembles were envied. The looks ranged from flashy red carpet moments to unexpected street style by celebrities (do you recall when Rosalia was seen in New York wearing a straitjacket?). Each of them had merit, though, and the majority were at least eye-catching, which is what fashion should always aim for.
Below we’ve compiled fashion’s 2024 superlatives in celebration of a year full of amazing ensembles.
Most consistently well-dressed
Since the start of our series, Zendaya has won more Looks of the Week than any other celebrity. Her most notable ensembles this year were from the February premiere of “Dune: Part Two” and her glitzy tribute to Cher at the October 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. According to Vanity Fair Spain, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar revealed in September that he was thinking of making a movie about the actress and her long-time stylist, Law Roach, because of how well-liked her fashion sense is.
Most Dedicated fashionable celebrity of 2024
Even though there was fierce competition—no press tour has been the same since Margot Robbie’s “Barbie” doll dress-up schedule—there was only one obvious winner this year. At almost every photo call and red carpet appearance over the last eight months, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have faithfully worn their characters’ green and pink hues. Regardless of popular opinion, a dress code so long is worth mentioning.
The greatest archival pull
In 2024, one of the biggest flexes for a fashion-forward superstar is still having access to museum-quality archives. Sabrina Carpenter wore a 1991 vintage Bob Mackie sequined gown originally fashioned for Madonna when she walked the red carpet at the MTV VMAs in September.
The ideal accessory
According to Michael Kors, an accessory is only “an exclamation point” to an ensemble. When Andrew Garfield completed his ensemble for the London premiere of “We Live in Time” in October, he undoubtedly made a statement by including a life-size cardboard cutout of his co-star Florence Pugh (shown above).
The most improbable fashion choice
In May, octogenarian and British comedy royalty John Cleese, best known as the star and co-creator of the British sitcom “Fawlty Towers” and a founding member of the UK comedy troupe Monty Python, was seen in London sporting a $550 appliqué denim logo cap from Miu Miu, Gen-Z’s preferred luxury brand.
The most contentious political issue
Peace be with you, Adidas. Sambas. Time of death: April 4, 2024, which also happened to be the day that former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wore them during a taped interview regarding childcare and tax laws.
The footwear choice was mocked by critics, with British GQ writing: “In an attempt to portray himself as youthful and stylish… An enduringly stylish trainer was destroyed for everyone by Sunak.
“In my defence, I would say I have been wearing Adidas trainers and Sambas and others for many, many years,” Sunak continued after expressing his “sincere apologies to the Samba community.”
The best sports-fashion fusion
What is all bows and green and white? Naomi Osaka during the US Open in 2024. Osaka made waves in August when she wore custom-made, coquettish Nike tennis jerseys with enormous satin bows and ruffles. “I think the phrase’magical girl’ on the court is what inspired the look for me,” she stated in a press release.
The most unexpected moment on the red carpet
Brooke Shields made the year’s biggest surprise at the Tony Awards in June. She lifted her canary yellow Monique Lhuillier gown to show off her matching rubber Crocs.
The simplest style to replicate at home
This year, Rihanna—the woman who popularised lace bodysuits as pregnancy wear—offered something more understated. Pair your newly laundered fluffy bathrobe with matching jewelry. Complete the look with gold point-toe stilettos and a full makeup application.
People’s decision
The first appearance of Monica Lewinsky’s Reformation fashion campaign was one of the most-read Looks of the Week in 2024. The “You’ve Got the Power” collection featured blazers and office-appropriate knitwear. Lewinsky wore a stylish black midi dress that contrasted with the windows of a tall boardroom, reclaiming her reputation.
Lewinsky had sexual encounters while working as a White House intern for President Bill Clinton. These encounters occurred during her early 20s. After authorities discovered it, Lewinsky’s reputation and career were ruined. This resulted in decades of misogyny, death threats, and social exclusion for Lewinsky, as well as Clinton’s impeachment.
Since then, she has become a symbol of female empowerment and a vocal opponent of bullying and cyberbullying.
