According to Abhishek Bachchan, he reportedly told his father, Amitabh Bachchan, that he believes he made “a big mistake” by becoming an actor.
Even though Abhishek Bachchan currently has a number of films in the works, there was a time when he openly questioned his abilities as an actor. He recounted approaching his father, renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan, with a confession in an interview with Galatta Plus.
The moment Abhishek acknowledged Amitabh Bachchan
“I went through a phase in my career when many of my films weren’t working,” Abhishek said to Amitabh. Critics criticized my performances regardless of the people I collaborated with. I mention “who I worked with” since I collaborated with some of the biggest filmmakers in the hopes that they would help me learn and fix things I haven’t been able to do. However, nothing was taking place. I went to my dad in a weak spot and said, “We need to talk,” which makes me feel ashamed to think about it today. I believe I made a major error. Nothing I try seems to work, thus I’m not cut out for this. I’ve experimented with a variety of films, genres, and directors. I simply cannot do it. It could be time for me to tell myself, “Hey, you’re not cut out for this.” You don’t measure up. “Find another thing to do,” Abhishek remembered.
Amitabh’s reaction
He gave me comfort. “I’m speaking to you as your elder, not as your father,” he continued. You’re far from the final product. You need to get much better. But with each of your films, I see progress. You have a good actor hidden inside of you. It is up to you and how hard you want to work to become good. Working will be the only way for you to improve your craft. So, just sign and go to work, regardless of the movie you end up with. And I did just that. I went out just now. Regardless of the role—supporting, secondary, or tertiary—I worked tirelessly until I gained self-confidence. And after that, till I was able to perform well at the box office and people began to rely on me as a leading man once more,” Abhishek continued.
His father was constantly referred to by Abhishek as his “reference point.” Amitabh attained success later than his son did. He made his breakthrough as the lead in Prakash Mehra’s 1973 smash Zanjeer, which launched his legendary career as the Angry Young Man in Hindi cinema after seven of his films failed at the box office.
Abhishek’s box-office success and failure
Abhishek was most likely referring to the period following R Balki’s 2009 blockbuster Paa, in which he co-starred with Amitabh and won a National Award (as producer). He later starred in films with Mani Ratnam (Raavan), Ashutosh Gowariker (Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey), Game (Abhinay Deo), Dum Maaro Dum (Rohan Sippy) and Players (Abbas-Mustan), but none of them were box office successes. With Vijay Krishna Acharya’s action thriller Dhoom 3 (2013), Farah Khan’s heist comedy Happy New Year (2014), and Rohit Shetty’s buddy comedy Bol Bachchan (2012), he then resumed his successful run.
